Walk the Plank into a Pirate Room!

Since The Pirates of the Caribbean movies came out, Pirate themed rooms have gotten very popular with young boys. Using a blue paint on the lower half of the walls creates a chair rail and cuts down on the space that the mural is painted on, thereby cutting costs, and the wave detail is a very cute design, much more interesting than a wooden chair rail. Pottery Barn was carrying a line of pirate themed bedding that went well with these murals, and you can find cute fabrics all over the place that would coordinate with this style of room.

Pink and Brown

Pink and Brown is the hot color combination in little girls rooms right now as you probably know already. Trends in clothing tend to mirror what is happening in interior spaces as well, and everything is beyond cute right now! The nurseries above were given that special something with very fancy paintings for very lucky little ladies.

This room was painted this deep pink color and then I added the lighter pink stripes and chocolate brown pinstripes, and created a chair rail with a floral border taken from the flowers used in the custom bedding.

This baby boutique was painted with pinks and blues set off by chocolate brown in the stripes and the large logo above the cash wrap. Abbie Rose is located in Aliso Viejo on Aliso Creek, their website and other contact information is here: Abbie Rose They have the cutest stuff in the store!

This nursery was painted with a simple circle design and the baby's monogram, the idea was taken from the bedding, a common place to start finding ideas and inspiration for your mural. A side note, this lucky client won a gift certificate at her daughter's school Silent Auction so the mural was free! If you have an even coming up I always will donate a gift certificate, let me know and I will put one together for your event!

Again, the bedding was the inspiration for this mural, I took the flowers from the bedding and created a chair rail between the brown and the pink, and then created a plaque of sorts with the baby's monogram.

I've found a new service for referrals online, if you offer some kind of service I highly recommend checking it out. Best part about it...it's free. Tuscany in the Suburbs

This mural was painted in the inset section of a pre-fab poured concrete fireplace, and the fireplace surround was faux painted to look as if it were hewn from an old, weathered piece of stone. The mural is a typical landscape from the Tuscany region in Italy, featuring a vineyard. Many new homes in the area have this kind of fireplace and the options for painting and making it really stand out are endless.

The kitchen of the same home has this stove hood which I painted with a faux background that played off the paint on the walls and the granite countertops. The lower edge was primed plywood and I painted that to match the existing cabinetry. The decorative painting of a grouping of grapes, pears and olives extend the Italian theme into this room, as there was not a lot of wall space for other artwork.

Mermaid Bathroom

This small mural was painted in the bathroom of a very dear friend of mine. They live on the boardwalk in Long Beach on the peninsula, and their house is designed with a retro beach feel...bamboo floors, tropical fabrics, and they have an impressive collection of Shag artwork. The mermaid for the bathroom was designed by me with their personalities and design likes in mind, a little funky and a very big focal point in a small room. As you can see below, they love her!

Everything Zen

This nursery is one of my all-time favorites. The parents were not going to find out if they were having a boy or girl, so we wanted to do something very gender-neutral so that the room could be used by little brothers or sisters that may come along in later years.

The Panda Bears add a playful touch and the contrast of Black & White so it didnt get too washed out, and the large Cherry Blossom tree brings in a punch of color that really stands out against the watercolor style background of the mural.

Playful Park

This room was designed closely with the mommy-to-be, and we included details from her bedding, photos of her and her husband as children, favorite books and wrapped it all up in a park themed room that will work well for future children as well. We painted the baby's name on a canvas and hung it (well, I used industrial strength Velcro, that canvas is not coming down unless they very forcibly remove it...that's how we got away with hanging it over the crib) so that when baby #2 comes I can simply paint another canvas with that name on it, and big sister can move into a new room, with a new mural, and the baby will have her old room. If you take out the pink in the accessories and bedding, the room is very gender-neutral and would look great for a boy if you just replaced the pinks with blues.

Torrey Pines Mural

This mural was painted for a bachelor that lives on a golf course. The wall is approximately 13' wide by 8' high, so the mural is a big impact. This type of mural is great in a game room, den or other type of general use room, giving it character and the "wow" factor.

Faux Marble Walls

This technique is something I do quite a bit of in powder rooms and other small spaces. Bathrooms and hallways are a perfect space for this look. In a large room, depending on what you have going on, this may be way too busy. In some I use metallic paints, some have just metallic on the veining, some have no metallic...each room is as different as each client and their wishes are. Custom sample boards can be worked up for your specific project.

Simple Safari

This room was painted a yellowish green color, and then we just painted the assorted animals
right on the solid paint, rather than doing a mural that covered every square inch of wall. This is a very practical way of doing things, saving my labor and your money, and gives you a very fun room at the same time. You really don't lose anything with this method of painting a mural.

Wastin' Away Again in Margaritaville....

Well, except for we swapped the margarita for a Corona bottle. Still refreshing! This mural was for a young adult, and the room looks about 10 times bigger with the mural on one wall. I wrapped it around the edges of both sides and faded it out with strong burshstrokes against the sand colored walls. Here I took photos of the process: No paint, sky, sky + ocean, sky + ocean + sand, finished mural.

The detail shots of this mural include a Sea Plane, hammock, plam trees, wooden beach chair with a parrot, Corona bottle (including the limes and bottle cap!).

Rooms fit for a Princess

These little girls live in style! Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and the rest of those girls have nothin' on my petite clients.

This Fairy Princess mural was all 4 walls, lots and lots of details. I took ideas from vintage fairy prints and used "flower fairies" in the mural, with their matching flowers. My other inspiration for this mural came from a set of books I had as a little girl, by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Robin James, the "Serendipity Books". GREAT trees and bunnies!

This playroom was designed as a loft from a previously open upstairs space. The sisters have each their own window and crown to look down upon us common folk from. Their mom told me that many play dates have ended with friends of the girls screaming and crying because they didn't want to leave the castle!
